During the latter years we have become a world of couch potatoes, taking no little or no exercise and relying on our cars and public transport to travel, this does not only effect adults but has been passed down to our children.
Physical inactivity has been described as the ‘silent killer of our time’ lack of physical activity is one of the biggest causes of illness and death throughout the world.
Surveys have shown that sedentary parents tend to have sedentary children, and active parents tend to have active children, it has been proven through studies in the United States that overweight children have greater long term success controlling their weight if they are involved in a family based exercise and diet program. The moral is that your children are more likely to become more active if you do.

By increasing your activity levels you are more likely to live longer, enjoy more healthy years of life and remain independent. It is recommended that on average we should be doing 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. ‘Moderate activity’ is that the exercise taken should leave us slightly out of breath and feeling warmer but still able to talk.
 
Make a determined effort to walk throughout the day, try some of these examples:
 
• Get off the bus or train a stop or two before your destination and walk the    rest of the way.
• Park your car in the furthest space in the car park.
• Walk up and down stairs instead of taking the lift.
• Walk the children to school.
• Walk to the shops for your newspaper, milk or groceries.

Becoming more active benefits your health, helps you lose weight and improves your body shape. Start now - make exercise part of your daily routine, increasing your daily activity, even by a small amount, can make a difference.
